Painting | Process

There are about 6-8 more paintings to complete in a very short period of time before my next show. Working under pressure yields results.

My recent works, say the last 15 paintings, are as much about the process of creating them as they are about the content, color and form. In particular, the larger paintings have many layers of translucent color.

These painting give viewers several different experiences when looking in the same area. The longer you look, the more there is to see, but it is not assertive.  At first glance, the people may look and think “that painting is mostly yellow,” which is generally true at a glance, and then underneath as people examine the layers, lines and marks and hidden color fields emerge also, so do shapes of under-painting that create resonance and contrast.  Artifacts and history of the painting show through and tell its story.

And if you don’t want to examine, you can relax with what’s presented at the surface --both are relevant. Though no metaphor is actually intended, it is similar to how I look at life.

Lets Get Physical

The exercise LP records below were discovered while cleaning out the home of an old friend who recently passed away. His wife, who he dearly loved and I never met, died years before. She was apparently into staying fit and exercised at home --using her record player of course.

The LP's span several decades (1960's-1980's) and are roughly in historical order.

1. Gloria is a proper lady with a nun-like collar. She exercises with her six daughters ...in the highest possible fidelity.

Exercise LP's 1950's - 1980's

2. Debby is sassy in her living room. Love the hi-fi furniture behind her.

Exercise LP's 1950's - 1980's

3. Family exercise time with Bonnie. The children are now all in therapy.

Exercise LP's 1950's - 1980's

4. The scene of Jazz and beat poets: all of whom wore black turtlenecks, smoked unfiltered cigarettes and of course, exercised.

Exercise LP's 1950's - 1980's

5. When Good Housekeeping put their seal of approval on an exercise record, it looked like this.

Exercise LP's 1950's - 1980's

6. Tune in, turn on and drop out with this pink yoga delight.

Exercise LP's 1950's - 1980's

7. This image I actually recall seeing when I was a kid; enter the era of the leg warmer with Jane Fonda.

8. My mom loved this woman's aerobic dancing. Jacki's shorts ride a little high, but she's really happy.

Richmond Show | Thursday Nov 18th

On November 18th, I will show about 15-16 new paintings at Living on Grove in Richmond.  Many thanks to Elizabeth Broach (my VA agent) for organizing the show and selling my work faster than I can create it.  More images of the work will be completed closer to the date.

I love Richmond, Virginia.

In 1994, I was invited to a state-sponsored scholarship program called the Governor's School for the Arts held during the summer at the University of Richmond. It was life changing, but at the conclusion of the program, I confidently declared that I would not be pursuing art as a career --I don't recall the rationale. I was 16 years old and not surprisingly, I have been wrong a few other times since then.

Wife in Tree

If you look carefully in this tree, you'll see my wife.  She is at the Dulles airport long term parking lot in DC searching for our car after we forgot where it was parked.

A playful and furtive creature, she was captured in this rare photo in her natural habitat.

Austin City Limits | 2010

John, Susannah, Liz and I traveled to Austin to see the Austin City Limits music festival.  We stayed at the San Jose Hotel, ate dozens of tacos, and saw about 15 bands over the two and half days we were there.

ACL has to be the cleanest, most professionally run large-scale music event I've ever seen.  Here was Saturday evening:

We also went to a party afterwards at Glens.  Good times.

Sharing a bittersweet mid-western ditty that came across my playlist today. The lyrics are not light (dealing with cancer), but the melody is perfect for a weekend afternoon.

Positano Dinner | Alone

There are clear advantages to the work I do, no doubt about it.  Travel to beautiful places and all that.  But the romantic spots without Liz are really tedious.  Hell, torturous.    --So the movie below is really for Liz, but I am sharing it.

Incidentally, this evening was only topped by a night several years ago in Paris when I came back to a gorgeous hotel suite (again alone), exhausted --only to find that the hotel had lowered the lights, covered my bed in rose petals, and put champagne on ice.

The soundtrack to this film is complements of the Villa Treville just south of Positano in Italy.

Carter Edsall, a long-time friend and dilettante of BBQ, Bluegrass, and humor is taking a serious stab at producing his own label of California red with the advent of his new label, Maysie, named for his grandmother.

We should all be thankful he picked the San Giovese grape as a main focus; I feel obliged to do my part to help promote his pursuits. Check out more about Maysie on either Facebook, or his soon-to-be-populated (hint-hint) site.

Capri | Afternoon

This was a quick shot of some water and the rocks off the Northwest side of Capri. The reputation for beauty here is legendary and not overrated. The property situated above this little spot, the Punta Tragara, is one of the most beautiful, intimate and charming 5-star properties in Italy. This spot is truly special, and unique in the world.

DJing | Last Night at Darnells

I have DJ'd live on turntables consistently since I was 22. I turn 38 tomorrow.

Last night at Darnell's during a break, a guy and I were talking about DJing and how it can move people --or make them run away. DJ's need to do several things well: curate music, select the right time to play it, and mix it well. It's harder than it sounds. Reading a crowd of people you have often never met, and getting them to move their bodies in front of a bunch of other strangers takes finesse. I love it.

Last night everyone jammed at Darnells, with smiles all around. Felipe and I rocked it.

Friends, neighbors, family, lend me your cheers. The time has come to celebrate life, the evil that men is oft interred with their bones, so let it be with Todd.

Hit & Run Driver Located & Caught

Detective Earhardt of the MPD phoned yesterday evening and announced that the driver of the vehicle that hit Todd has been caught. Earhardt mentioned at the beginning of the call that "fate has a way of catching up with you" in regard to the fact that driver was located in the ICU unit of a nearby hospital being treated for 3 bullet wounds in a gang-related feud on Aug 5th. He is expected to recover and is under 24 hour police supervision in the meantime.

On behalf of Todd & Leah, their friends and family, and the Columbia Heights community, many thanks to Detective Earhardt and the team at the Major Crash Division of the MPD for their diligence in solving this case.

We also owe Jennifer Donelan and the team at ABC a huge thank you for bringing this crime to the surface and helping to keep DC residents informed.

Now the US legal system will do it's job, and we hope to have safer streets and neighborhoods as we look ahead.

Coming Home | Friday

Todd is coming home tomorrow. Today we found him on his feet in the physical rehabilitation center and smiling. 33 lbs lighter, but smiling. Time to get that appetite back, TB.

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

Tuesday | Todd

Guess who is heading home soon? After about 40 days in the hospital, Todd's doctor's are considering letting him go home in 6-7 days.

There is still much recuperation in front of him since he has extremely limited us of his arms and hands. Doctors are considering the next steps for that part, but they feel he can return home safely and begin some of his more basic routines there with assistance and therapy from medical professionals at his house.

Naturally, those who are willing to pitch in to help Todd & Leah will be welcome also. I will check with them once they are homeward bound about how best fit friends into their evolving situation.

Visitors Welcome | Monday

Todd is happy to see visitors now that the big medical risks seem to be subsiding. I visited him on Saturday and he looked great, was smiling, and had improved since the last time I saw him.

His hospital room is small, so only two visitors at a time can fit. And he still gets a tired during the day, so he asked to keep it to two visits per day for now. If my math is right, he can see up to four people per day then --morning and afternoon would work.

Jennifer Brundage has generously offered to coordinate visits for everyone. She can be emailed at:

Hi Todd,

We miss you at work and feel so badly that you are undergoing such pain every day.
And although we don’t always understand why things happen as they do, we know that God is sovereign and faithful.
Cling to these truths, knowing that in His time all will be made right, according to His purposes. Our job is to keep the faith and pray – never ceasing.
And to listen to your doctors, nurses and physical therapists!!

Todd -you continue to be in my thoughts and prayers, and I love the photo of you working at the computer. You are doing so well and thanks be to
God for this miracle of healing!

Doing Well | Wednesday

This week Todd walked unassisted down the hall, though his arms are still not giving him much real use yet. His physical therapist is cute, no wonder he's doing well.

We spent some time working on the computer, which entertained Todd and helped some projects at work. Then I made sure he drank a shake with about 90 grams of protein it.

Dear Chris et al,

I'm not certain if you are tracking the traffic on this site, but I want to assure you, Todd, and his family, that those of us who witnessed the incident are deeply grateful for the constant updates.

Today I contacted our MPD team to check on updates on an arrest. They are reaching out to the major accidents team to get an answer.

Chicken Soup | Karen B

When I make the soup again (soon) I will write it down, right now it's only in my head but here is basically what I do:

It's just a soup I make for my family when they are sick. It is homemade chicken stock, I used left over roasted chicken that I made the other night (fresh from the Amish market), sea salt, pepper, lots of garlic and fresh ginger, Chinese parsley(cilantro), a tiny bit of soy sauce. Oh, and whatever noodles I have on hand. (Wagon wheels this time but usually just short noodles).

I guess the key is good ingredients. Also taste it to see if it's right.

Friday Evening | Todd Update

Before anyone vilifies me for "making Todd work" he was insistent on having a few minutes on his computer.

Anyway, he was doing very well when I saw him today. Good job, Todd, doctors, nurses, Leah, Autumn, Jim, Caleb, Lucky, and the entire support community who are helping him along.

Todd gulped down about a pint of Karen Buckley's excellent chicken soup today. He said, "My God, that's good! I need the recipe!" Karen could you please provide it to the group of people following Todd? The cilantro flavor was what made it.

Have a nice weekend everyone.

Friday Mid-Day | Todd Update

The news continues to be good.

Todd emerged from surgery yesterday with nurses and doctors very pleased with his progress. The skin grafting is going very well, he's healing quickly and with less-than-expected infections. I spoke with Autumn, Todd's sister, who was upbeat and said that he's coming along well.

As for the details, the right hand and arm are being put to limited use with some basic tools and he'll likely be feeding himself shortly. The left arm has been grafted, and while it is not strong enough yet to use, there was no indication from the MRI that he has sustained an injury that would impede its use in the future.

That said, the hospital staff maintain that no visitors outside of family is still in effect. His hospital room is basically sealed off --the less traffic in and out of the room, the lower the risks of infection during his recovery. So far, the limited traffic and visitors plan has been working well judging from Todd's low infection rate. Todd says that everyone is "over-reacting" about the sterile environment; for some strange reason the nurses and doctors just won't listen to him.

I will post another report tonight after I learn more about his progress. Everyone, we have a lot to be thankful for as the progress over the last 3 weeks as been excellent. Many thanks for all the prayers, medical attention, food-deliveries to Todd and Leah's house, cards, Todd's ever-constructive attitude, and the grace of God.

Cheers Todd

Cheers Todd!! This one is to your health and speedy recovery.

Monique, Laura D, Judy, Lizzy, Bill, Kasey, Stephen and Chris

Thursday Update

Todd was in another surgery today to clean and repair the skin on his arm and legs. The doctors have accelerated the schedule of surgeries since his progress has been strong. The past surgeries have been successful, though the MRSA bacteria that is prevalent in hospitals may still be an issue.

The physical therapists and doctors are waiting for the rest of the skin grafting to take before we will see how the left arm comes along (at the moment, Todd cannot lift it). The consensus at the moment is that if the bicep muscle gets more time to repair, the nerves may gain more traction, but it is really too early to tell. Since he can wiggle all his left fingers, I am optimistic, (then again, I am always optimistic --and given the alternative, optimism rocks).

I will be hanging out with Todd from 4-9pm tomorrow. I will update everyone before the weekend. We will be aiming for progress and good news. Thanks to everyone for their support, it's working.

Tuesday | From Jenn B

Todd's surgery went well yesterday, although he was in a lot of pain afterwards. They did some skin grafting. It sounds like he was in less pain today (this is all relative--the slightest movements cause him inconceivable amounts of pain). The jury is still out about his left arm, so please keep praying for him and sending him positive energy! More surgery is scheduled for Friday.

Yesterday they said his MRSA infection was smaller than they thought, which is good, but today when they changed his bandages they found that some of his other wounds are infected as well, which is bad. So far I think this causes setbacks but can be overcome--as soon as they get him out of that MRSA-ridden hospital anyway!!! Based on my limited understanding I think he'll be in there another 2-3 weeks. Otherwise he seems about the same--helpless and heart-breaking. Leah is still spending about 8 hours a day by his side.

Also food is still welcome, especially meaty delicousness for Todd! Thanks a million to Pete and Kate for the mountain of grub! They were both totally psyched about it and hope they can thank you personally soon!

Jenn

Monday, July 12, 2010

Monday | from Jenn B

Please keep your prayers coming for Todd! Although he has made miraculous progress, he is still facing some major hurtles. He is fighting an MRSA infection in his largest wound, although word is that this is very common. He also still has several surgeries ahead.

A new concern also arose today: possible nerve damage in his left arm, which he has not been able to move since the accident. Leah is seriously worried about this. It may indicate a permanent injury. Leah is asking everyone to keep Todd in their prayers and send him positive energy to help heal his left arm.

The good news is that Todd is eating now, and in addition to bringing Leah food for herself and family we can bring food for Todd too! They are trying to get him eating lots of protein to heal fast. The only specifics I got were salad with cottage cheese or meat, although probably we won't need 10 of those! Sounds like the hospital food consists of canned vegetables and potatoes--not exactly designed to whet his appetite.

I'm sure any food you could contribute for Leah or Todd would be very much appreciated, and thanks to all of you who have helped so far. My impression is that it has been a big help for Leah to come home exhausted and know she can get a decent meal (and a glass of wine to unwind!). Please get in touch with me if you'd like to contribue and we can work out the timing.

Once Todd is able to fight off the infection Leah thinks he might be ready for visitors. Please continue to keep him in your prayers!

Jenn

Happy Friday

Todd and I spent the morning working a little bit with the computer (I did the typing since he still can't use his hands/arms), and working on his physical rehab exercises. The risk of pneumonia and infection lessen each day, and his strength is slowly returning. His mood is generally happy and light.

Today the Phys Rehab team had him walk down the hall of the hospital, which is the first walk he's taken since the accident on June 26th.

He's starting to talk about visitors, though Leah and his doctors still need to clear it. Thanks everyone for the support; Todd is waiting to convey a big thank you to everyone in person.

Todd Thank You | Friday

Todd is starting his physical therapy today. He had this to say to everyone last night.

He's coming along pretty well, but he has a lot of work to do. His lungs are better, and each day he's improving. Thanks everyone.

Monday, July 5, 2010

Monday Morning Status

I visited Todd today in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). We talked for about an hour; the first thing he wanted everyone to know though was how lucky he is to have such great friends and community support.

Breathing is chore since pretty much all his ribs are broken, but the rehabilitation team had him on his feet yesterday and there will more rehab to come. The near term is mostly getting him to use his lungs so pneumonia does not present itself. If he makes progress in the next 48 hours, he will be moved out of the ICU and into private room.

His mental attitude is proactive and aware, and he's definitely up for what's ahead of him, though he's exhausted from the last 10 days of medical procedures and recovery. Again, he asked me to say a huge Thank You to everyone involved in helping to save his life and supporting him during his recovery. He was literally in tears with gratitude to be both alive and the recipient of so much compassion.

Thanks everyone, keep the warm wishes coming.

It has been such a relief as the news during the week became more positive and that you are pulling through. Keep moving forward our thoughts are with you.

I look forward to more fun and shared experiences in the future.

ABC News - 5pm today

ABC Channel 7 local news will be airing a story on this incident this evening on the 5pm news hour. Jennifer Donelan, the ABC reporter who is covering the story, has done a fantastic job of tracking down eye witnesses and putting people in touch. Many thanks to the entire team at ABC for their effort in helping both Todd and the community in Petworth and Columbia Heights learn about the incident.

If you miss the broadcast, a specific link to WJLA ABC Video will be posted on this blog as soon as it's available.

Happy Fourth everyone! (the response to this sad incident from the community confirms that we do indeed live in a great country!) Enjoy the holiday safely with family and friends.

From Jen B

I've been coordinating food for Leah and Autumn as best I can for the last few days. Please get in touch if you would like to contribute and I can give you an idea of what they might need. I know everyone is anxious to help, but it will stress them out to be smothered with charitable donations right now, so I'm trying to ration out the giving. What they need most right now is breathing room and sleep.

Just a quick message to say thank you for all the updates about Todd on your blog. I check in several times each day and its always great to hear about even the smallest improvements and positive signs. I can’t (and don’t) want to imagine what he went through…and is going though.

We will keep the positive thoughts and prayers going as no doubt he has a tough time yet ahead. My heart goes out to him. When you do get a chance to talk to him, give him a big (virtual!) hug from us all.

Freda.

Thanks for creating this blog, I'm glad to hear that Todd's doing so well under the circumstances.

Thursday | Good

Todd is doing OK today. The fact that they are pushing him by lowering his pain medication is putting him in a tight spot. Medically, the doctors are still pleased with his progress.

Still no vistors yet. Thanks to everyone who has offered to prepare food for Todd, Leah and their family. We will coordinate some food drops when there is some regularity to the schedule.

Have a great day.

From Isabel

Hi Chris,

Thank you so much for updating your blog on Todd's condition and for the facebook group. As David mentioned, I saw Todd being dragged by the car that hit him, and saw him laying on asphalt, hurting and moaning. I have never seen anything so horrible in my life. I felt that I had witnessed a crime against humanity, and I haven't stopped thinking about him ever since.

Reading about Todd has brought back the feelings of anger and despair I felt Friday. Todd seems like an amazing human being and is surrounded by people who love him dearly. This makes me feel a lot better, because I know that all this love, care, and response from our community will hopefully help him heal, both physically and emotionally.

After thinking so much about him and now reading on your blog and facebook, I almost feel like I already know him, and I truly wish him well. As David told you, we live on the corner of 13th and Quincy, and we are more than happy to help with anything he and his wife need. Please let us know how we can help (food, picking up mail, watering plants, anything!).

I'll be following his progress, and once again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you!

3rd Surgery | Good

Todd did well on his third procedure according to the nurses. He has finished having the gravel cleaned out of his limbs and they are now putting him back together. The breathing tube was removed yesterday and he can say a few words. The fact that the medical team is very pleased with his progress is a relief to everyone (please remember that visitors are not yet permitted while he remains in the ICU).

Thank you all for all the support and many thanks to all the neighbors on the block of 13th street where the incident occurred, as well as the Prince of Petworth and the ANC commissioner David Tumblin for mobilizing the community. Your accounts, your pictures, and your care for the victim (as well as holding the accessories to the crime until police arrived) show a neighborhood full of character, integrity and compassion.

We'll need to throw a block party when this all over and Todd is back on his feet. Keep the prayers and good thoughts coming!

From Felipe

When I was a child, I told my mother that I feared death while I was very sick in bed. She told me that stubborn weeds never die. I realized that I was going to be ok. The humor she placed on her statement cheered me up and gave me strength to go through it.

Todd like me is a stubborn weed. Indication of his humor is present; I can only conclude he will come through!

My love goes to Todd and his family.
Felipe.

911

Adam, one of the neighbors who followed up with MPD about the incident by email and wanted to know the response time of the police and EMT, said that the police recorded 12 calls to 911 in 74 seconds about this one incident alone.

From David (ANC 4C06)

Hello Christopher!

We all feel for you, Todd, and his wife.

I was not a witness, as I was calling 911. My wife saw him being dragged underneath the car. Some of the neighbors (two for certain) saw the immediate aftermath and were screaming at the car to not back up. One of them, whose name I don't know, I believe saw the actual impact too. It was certainly violent. His watch was a good 10 feet from the bike, and the visor from the helmet was a good five to 10 feet away as well. We can all be thankful the strap held together. The three girls who fled the car were clearly traumatized as well, but they were working on their story as we worked to keep them from leaving the scene. There was considerable anger directed at them until I could get the neighbors to pull back, so they would stay long enough for MPD. Needless to say, when MPD arrived, they were more focused on Todd's immediate needs than in interviewing witnesses, so it took some time. We have pictures of the bike.

Several neighbors want to send him something to wish for a speedy recovery. I can put you in touch with the witnesses for whom I have contact information.

Hi all,

I spoke with Lucky last night and she said that Todd is now off the respirator. That is huge because he's able to talk. He is even eating!

I got to talk to him briefly on Monday night with Leah and Autumn's permission, before I had to come back to LA. He shook his head "yes" when I mentioned doing a marathon with him when he has healed.

God Bless him and everyone. Please keep those prayers coming. God is working a miracle with how fast he is healing. I'm told the nurses are amazed.

Love,
Jen

I saw mention of this blog on Price of Petworth and wanted to add my thoughts and prayers for Todd and his family. I live barely a 10 minute walk from this intersection and just received my motorcycle license this weekend.

I really would like to wish Todd a speedy recovery and all the best. Petworth and Columbia Heights seem to have strong communities so do not hesitate to reach out for strength and support should you need it.

Best,

Collin

Good Times

This image was from a couple weeks ago in Punta Ala, Italy during a vacation. Liz, Glen, Leah, Todd, Mike hanging out at sunset.

Jim H says...

"Todd has been inquiring a lot about how all the hospital gadgets work --asking the nurses about this and that. By the time he's out of there, the Washington Hospital Center will have a new website."

Information on the Suspects

30 June 2010 1:54 PM | David Tumblin Said:

MPD’s major accident division is working with the three people who fled the car (but not the scene) after the impact. We believe Todd was traveling on 13th with the right-of-way when he was hit by the car on Quincy crossing 13th. Other witnesses will have better infomration. MPD recovered the vehicle. They are working to identify who was in the car and who was driving. We will continue to seek stop signs. The pedestrian walk at Kansas, Quebec, and 13th is also under review.

Update on the Crime

Regarding the Prince of Petworth post on the hit and run.

David Tumblin Said:

All, I am glad to see this post. I live on the corner where the hit-and-run occured. My wife was first out of the house as I dialed 911, and she witnessed Todd being dragged under the car. Two female witnesses ran after the car. We also managed to keep three passengers who jumped out of the car after the crash from running. We are all in contact with MPD’s lead investigator from their major crash division. MPD’s local commander keeps us up-to-date on Todd’s medical condition, on the status of the investigation (information is not reported if there are still active issues), and on a review they are doing of the MPD and fire department response time. While 911 and MPD and fire records show a reasonable response time, many of us are now accustomed to a near instant and overwhelming response that we feel we didn’t see the night of the hit-and-run.

The overwhelming response of the neighborhood reaffirms how wonderful our community is, even when responding to tragedy. I will share what information I have with Todd’s friends. E-mail me at 4c06@anc.dc.gov.

Hungry

Todd' vitals are improving and he is doing very well so far. He is awake and he's talking and he says he's really hungry. He's joking a little bit and his only visitors right now are still Leah and Autumn. So the news is good.

Still no visitors at all. The risk of infection is still serious. Thanks everyone for your prayers and good thoughts!!

from Torrie

Just wanted to add my two cents...... we all have known Todd for quite sometime and we know that this guy is a true warrior a fighter! There is no doubt in my mind that he will pull through this with all of our prayers. This is a guy who runs marathons for fun... got married on a mountain. Just keep the faith and keep in your thoughts and prayers everyday and all day. God always takes care of his children... and I know Todd is a true believer in the power of God. Chris... keep sending the updates... thanks.

Much love to all of ya'll... miss you - T

Improvement

I spoke with Leah and Autumn today around 2:30pm who were both exhausted but upbeat about Todd's overall progress.

Autumn said his daily improvement has been remarkable and that nurses are impressed at his healing rate. She also said his appearance is healthier, and he looks physically stronger than just two days ago. So basically all the news is good today. He's doing well, all things considered.

The doctors have explained to Leah that the less people that enter Todd's room the better, since the risk of infection is the single biggest risk. I am sure I have emphasized this too much already, but Leah asked that I mention again to hold off on visiting until he's out of the ICU.

Thanks for the prayers and good vibes everyone; they're working.

Tuesday Morning

There are no big changes today, which translates to "Todd's doing OK." His doctors are doing a big assessment this morning and after that we should have an idea of the game plan.

For now, he's stable (uncomfortable but stable). Keep the positive thoughts coming, this next phase is long and tough.

A group of folks have volunteered to prepare food for the family since there is a lot of time spent at the hospital and little time for much else. I'll be checking in with Leah today to see what would be most convenient. Thanks everybody!

Best,

Mike | Man of Stealth

Only Leah and Autumn have been permitted to see Todd so far, and even Lucky (Todd's mom) has taken a number to see him next.

How then did Mikey B find himself having a brief conversation with Todd this afternoon then? Mike seems to have connections everywhere.

After being told he had broken the rules, Mike reported that Todd looked much better than he expected: eyes wide open, looking around, wiggling his feet and acknowledging Mike with nods or shaking his head. Mike felt encouraged by Todd's appearance and said Todd looked as if he were fit enough to get up and walk away.

Anyway, the doctors have firmly requested that no more visitors try to infiltrate the ICU to visit him, he's just not strong enough for visitors yet.

...but Mike, thanks for the good news. Keep the positive vibes heading Todd's way everyone.

From Kai

Best thoughts and wishes from Oregon, Todd!!! If there’s anyone who can pull through adversity like this, it’s you!!!

Hold Off on Visiting For Now

Now that Todd is coming out of shock, he is dealing with a significant amount of pain and emotion regarding his condition and what lies ahead. The doctors and Leah have asked that visitors hold off on coming to see him until his situation improves. He needs all his strength focused on rebuilding.

And lastly, Leah and Autumn need a little rest. If you'd like to wish them well, please do it here or on the Facebook page for Todd. Their phones have been ringing off the hook and their voice mail boxes are full. Thanks for all the prayers and warm wishes, it really counts!

Someone inform Diane Rehm at NPR that she was the first woman Todd asked for. And for godsakes, don't mention it to Leah.

I was on my computer at 8:30 this morning and saw your message. I am in AZ at the moment visiting my baby, & my kids. But I immediately forwarded your email to my church. Our Monday Night Bible Study is not called the praying maniacs for nothing. Todd's strong faith & strong body will get him through this. What is the hospital? Please keep me posted as to any operations, time of operation & date & there will be prayers before, during, & after his surgery.

Best wishes,

Laura

Monday Morning Status

I spoke with Jim today around 9am; Todd is stable after the second surgery yesterday. The doctors continue to remove gravel from his right leg, and at the moment that is the main area of concern because the damage is so severe. He will have more surgery today.

This morning, he tapped on his bed with his foot and the nurse was able to communicate with him. She said that after asking him a few different questions, he indicated that he's doing OK and "bored," which I took as an excellent sign that his brain and personality are well intact.

Leah and Autumn are with him now, and have been visiting with him for over an hour.

The police recovered the vehicle that hit him. No more information on the crime has been released.

From Janisha

My prayers and well wishes are with Todd – and may the Lord bless him, his loved ones, and all of those providing his care and treatment during his recovery.

From Karen

Dear Leah,

Prayer is so very powerful, and we are all praying for Todd to come through this most difficult time with the help of his surgeons, family and friends.
Todd is strong in so many ways -- physically, mentally and spiritually -- and he WILL come out the other side of this.

Please know we are all here for you, Todd, and his entire family.

May God watch over you and Todd as he begins the long road to recovery.

Much love,
Karen

From Glen

Thanks for the update Chris. Clearly this is a horrible accident and I have been keeping Todd in my thoughts and prayers. There are a few things that I know about Todd...

Todd is strong in his faith. I know that his love and belief in god will help guide him through this.

Todd is strong in body. He has run marathons, triathlons, and iron man competitions. I know that his physical ability to endure will help guide him through this.

Todd is strong in family and friends. We will stand by him, support him and help guide him through this.

Please keep us posted. Let us know if there is anything we can do for him or Leah in this time of need.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for this difficult update. I am still in a state of shock just as everybody else I am sure. And I feel so bad about not being there, although I know there is little to be done right now. Please keep me posted on the progress. I hope to be able to visit Todd as soon as I get back. I fly in Wednesday evening, and the visiting hours may be over by then, but maybe Thursday depending on Todd's condition. I will follow your advice on what's best to do. My whole family is praying for Todd. Please give Leah a hug from me.

Thanks,

Anna

Todd was involved in a very serious accident on Friday evening. Two blocks from his home, while at a stop sign on his motorcycle he was struck by a hit-and-run driver. He is currently at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC fighting for his life. While his head, face, neck and spine seem to be OK, his ribs lungs and heart took a beating as did his entire right side.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers, he needs your support now. We all know that if anyone can pull through a tough challenge and inspire people on the other side, Todd can. I will update you when I know more.

There are so many prayers going to The Man upstairs, he couldn't possibly ignore them. Tell Todd more people than he ever knew about are praying for his full recovery. Give him lots of love from me.

Chris,

Katy forwarded your message. Why one human being would deliberately do this to another is beyond my understanding. I want you to know Robert and I will continue to think positive, healing, supportive thoughts. I know David Simon is working magic and sending healing mojo from upstairs.

Todd has many more mountains to climb, races to run, samba's to swing to, bathrooms to clear out, pigs to roast, wines to enjoy and songs to whistle; his good work in this world is not finshed.

Please let Todd know we're pulling for Team Beckett.

Sunday June 27 | Todd Update

Today went a little better.

The physician who initially accepted Todd’s mangled body into the trauma unit was surprised to see his quick progress. The measures to regulate his heart have been removed so it can go on its own and the assistance to his lungs has been ratcheted down also. The surgery yesterday to repair his right leg seemed to go well, and he is in surgery again now to address other issues of his arms.

He is still facing serious obstacles with grafting skin and the risk of possible infection, but the immediate danger of his system giving out entirely seems to be subsiding. Fortunately his head and spine seem to be OK and there has been no mention of possible paralysis or cognitive damage. Last night he woke up briefly to see Leah in his room, which must have been an enormous comfort to him.

Leah and Todd have had half a dozen friends and family arrive from out of town, and the out-pouring of good wishes arriving by both email and text message are fantastic. Prayer groups have been mobilized and people are really working for him.

So please keep it up everyone, it seems to be working. I know he’ll tell you how much he appreciates it when he’s able.

Saturday June 26th | Todd Update

Todd was involved in a very serious accident on Friday evening. Two blocks from his home, while at a stop sign on his motorcycle he was struck by a hit-and-run driver. He is currently at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC fighting for his life. While his head, face, neck and spine seem to be OK, his ribs lungs and heart took a beating as did his entire right side.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers, he needs your support now. We all know that if anyone can pull through a tough challenge and inspire people on the other side, Todd can. I will update you when I know more.

More details:

Todd was not just struck by the hit and run driver, but dragged ¾ of a city block by the same vehicle. The details are vague but it is evident the driver would not stop dragging him, and frankly, this makes me want to cry when I think about what he went through during that experience.

I spoke with one of the witnesses yesterday who said that at the time of the incident, they heard someone screaming in the street and ran outside to find him lying directly in front of their row house. He was attempting to get up, but the right front part of his leg was worn to the bone, and his right hand had lost two fingers. Then he fell back to the ground and when paramedics arrived his lungs collapsed. He suffered multiple breaks on multiple ribs, a bruised heart, a broken arm, and lots of loss of skin. When I went back to the scene during the day, I filmed a movie showing a 150-200 ft strip of blood down the middle of the street.

The doctors are trying to save his life by grafting skin, and he has a very tough fight in front of him. They said that yesterday was a good day in surgery considering the severity of his condition.

Naturally Leah is completely shattered. She had seen Todd leave the house just prior to the accident (which occurred two and half blocks away) on Thirteenth and Quincy NW.
